Numbers 18

Numbers 18 Commentary

by Brad Boyles

As mentioned in previous chapters, the Levites were given special authority and privileges among the spiritual duties assigned by God. However, they were not given the same authority as priests. This is the main issue that contributed to the rebellion by Korah and his followers. In verse 3, God reiterates the role of the Levites in comparison to the priest.

They are to fulfill their duties to you and their responsibilities for the Tent, but they must not have any contact with sacred objects in the Holy Place or with the altar. If they do, both they and you will be put to death.

Numbers 18:3 GNB

The entire point of these duties was to preserve their holiness before the Lord. The Levites did not receive a land inheritance like the other tribes. Their portion was the Lord Himself who provided for them through the administration of tithes and the gifts of His people. Their role was to serve according to God’s standard of holiness and trust that He will provide the rest. Sound familiar?

We do not have an inheritance in the world, although, some might like to believe it. The truth is, we are taking nothing with us when we die. But, for those of us who trust in God and place our entire lives in service to Him, our inheritance, like the Levites, becomes God Himself. He ushers us into His presence for eternity with all-inclusive access to new bodies, new Heaven, and a new Earth. Essentially, He makes all things new in His Kingdom.

So, the question is, do we come with the same attitude as the Levites when approaching God in fear and reverence? Are we concerned with our holiness? What would God say about your growth these days?
