Isaiah 4

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Isaiah 4 Commentary

by Brad Boyles

Isaiah 4:2 describes the Branch of the Lord.

The time is coming when the LORD will make every plant and tree in the land grow large and beautiful. All the people of Israel who survive will take delight and pride in the crops that the land produces.

Isaiah 4:2 GNB

Similarly, Jeremiah and Zechariah write of the Branch – Jesus the Messiah – who will be beautiful, glorious, and bring forth spiritual fruit. This last part is important. Remember John 15 where Jesus speaks of this Himself?

In that day speaks of the future revelation of the glory of the Lord on the earth (Isa 2:2-4). The Branch of the LORD has the double sense of the earth yielding its fruit and of Christ yielding spiritual fruit (Isa 11:1-5; Jer 23:5; Zec 3:8; Joh 15:1-8). Because Christ humbled Himself, He will be crowned with glory (Isa 49:7; Isa 52:13; Isa 53:12; Php 2:9-11). beautiful and glorious: Together the words indicate “dazzling beauty.” The reign of Jesus the King of Creation will be marked by plenty. The earth will be released from its curse, producing all that God intended it to produce in the beginning.

Nelson’s New Illustrated Commentary

It’s not just that He is the Branch. It’s not just that He’s glorious and beautiful. Through Him, our human depravity will supernaturally blossom and bring forth fruit. We will grow from Him, and fruit will follow from us. The critical reminder is that apart from the vine, the branch can do nothing. Absolutely nothing.

The question then becomes, are you connected to the True Vine?
