Ezekiel 48

Ezekiel 48 Commentary

by Brad Boyles

Some view the final chapters of Ezekiel as a literal prophecy to be fulfilled during the end times. This is definitely possible. However, I tend to lean more toward the immediate context for readers of that time. The symbolism is thick within each detail of a restored Israel. Furthermore, the symbolism was described by Ezekiel in a way that those coming back from exile would have understood.

God’s desire was to dwell among His people. This was clear from the beginning of his covenant. Ezekiel reiterates this idea by reminding the people of the temple and its purpose. The temple would reside among the tribes which again symbolizes the people being close to God. The priesthood represented the mediation between man and God, something that Jesus Christ has completely fulfilled. The territory itself represented the inheritance of the people. This inheritance was not earned but freely given out of the mercy of God.

Overall, this final chapter once again illustrates God’s desire to dwell among the people as they worship Him for His goodness. Their job was to display to all creation the power and glory of their God as they cultivated the land. As stewards of His blessings, it was a task that required them to be in daily communion with the Lord.

When you consider the New Covenant, all of these same points remain. We have the Holy Spirit dwelling among us. We commune daily with our Father and our Savior Jesus Christ. We are blessed spiritually and materially in order to be great stewards and give all glory back to Him. Although the era is much different, the God we serve is the same yesterday, today and forever.
