Ezekiel 47

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Ezekiel 47 Commentary

by Brad Boyles

If we read this chapter as a future prophecy of the end times, we get a picture of the amazing geographical changes that will occur in the middle east. The water becomes a source of life and of healing for everything and everyone. We see this same theme from the beginning of the Bible (Gen 2:8-10) to the very end (Revelation 22). As Hank has written, we also see this theme personified in Jesus as He promises to give us living water.

But, where I want to draw your attention to is the end of this chapter and the treatment of strangers.

All foreign residents will receive their share with the people of the tribe among whom they are living. I, the Sovereign LORD, have spoken.”

Ezekiel 47:23 GNB

What this means is that non-Israelites who have married into Israelite families will be treated no differently than the native people. Foreigners will be qualified to share the territorial inheritance of the tribal boundaries. This illustrates a grand theme of Scripture that God’s desires for us to welcome strangers into His presence. For us considered Gentiles, this is the only way we are able to claim inheritance into God’s Kingdom. He opened up the Gospel to us even though we were not part of His original chosen people.

In the age we live in, it’s becoming more and more acceptable to keep strange people with strange cultures out of our territory. Though we (always) need to show wisdom with strangers, I believe God’s heart in over the sweep of Scripture is all about welcoming others into His presence rather than turning them away in the name of security, privacy, or fear.

“Do not mistreat foreigners who are living in your land. Treat them as you would an Israelite, and love them as you love yourselves. Remember that you were once foreigners in the land of Egypt. I am the LORD your God.

Leviticus 19:33-34 GNB

  • this is such a blessed piece. God gave me this Word tonight after many years of venturing away from and faltering in my faith. I'm looking into this scripture again as I now have a little baby girl, and the fears of what is happening in this world as I try to protect and guide her, are real, but i can only look to God. I'm so glad I came across your blog. God bless you.
