Ephesians 3 Commentary

by Brad Boyles

It’s one of my favorite prayers in Scripture. Ephesians 3:14-21.

Once you really see and experience how much Jesus loves you, everything will begin to change.  The love of Christ is wide enough to save anyone who repents. His love is deep enough to forgive the most horrific sins. His love is long enough to take us through eternity. And his love is high enough to reach into the heavens.

Paul is praying for us to investigate and experience the four complete dimensions of Christ’s love. He’s daring you to try and find an end to His love in any way, shape or form! Investigate and experience the dimensions of His love. And he writes that we would experience it together with all the saints (that means all believers). So, it is not an individual pursuit, but one that is experienced with other like-minded people. He asks for us to be rooted so we are growing in His love. Then, he asks that we are grounded so we are unshakably protected within His love.

And finally, here’s the beautiful ending.

and to know the love of Christ which surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled up to all the fullness of God.

Ephesians 3:19 NASB

The fullness of God. That’s the destination, right? I can’t even begin to explain what that means or looks like practically. However, I really like this commentary by Adam Clarke.

“Among all the great sayings in this prayer, this is the greatest. To be FILLED with God is a great thing; to be filled with the FULLNESS of God is still greater; but to be filled with ALL the fullness of God utterly bewilders the sense and confounds the understanding.”

Adam Clarke

Let us get filled up to all the fullness of God.
