Ezekiel 16 Commentary
by Brad Boyles
This chapter is an anti-entitlement message. Once again, there is application that is extremely relevant for our culture today. The truth is, we all have skeletons in our closet. We are not always who we portray ourselves to be in a public setting. God was reminding His people of three things…
- They were born to Canaanite parents. (Eze 16:3)
- They were abandoned at birth. (Eze 16:4-5)
- They were adopted. (Eze 16:6-7)
There is a lot of crossover for believers today. We were born as sinners. We have been spiritually abandoned by this world and the forces of darkness. And, through Jesus, we have been adopted into God’s family. When these points are considered, our minds should reflect on our current behavior. Have I taken all this for granted? Am I remembering where I came from?
Ultimately, God was using this story to rhetorically ask if the people were giving a reasonable response to His grace. What is a reasonable response for someone who was discarded as a baby and then rescued and cared for? What is a reasonable response for us today who have been justified before the Living God by His Son Jesus Christ?
